“Dream Party” is the sort of assured, impeccably performed, and energetically sung track that a fan might expect to get from an established R&B singer in the midst of her career. Jodie Jay sounds like she’s been doing this for years, and, in a way, she has. She was born into a family of entertainers, and she was determined from a young age to make her voice heard. She wrote the song – and others like it – long ago, and has been refining her sound and delivery ever since. At 17, she’s decided that the time is right, and the world is ready, and we’re pretty sure she’s about to be rewarded for her patience.

Listeners certainly will be. Jodie Jay has a voice that makes an immediate impression: clear and strong, sultry and conversational in its lower register, and electrifying when she reaches for the high notes on the choruses. Her production, too, reveals her to be a musician of uncommon vision and imagination. She’s fused throwback disco, eighties new wave, classic nineties R&B, and modern dance music and fitted it all to a beat that is guaranteed to get the dancefloor moving. Contemporary as she is, she’s also an artist with a firm grounding in the history of pop, and she draws from it judiciously and with the confidence of a young woman who fully expects to be in show business for a long time.

Her sense of personal style is similarly timeless. The “Dream Party” clip combines choreography and lighting inspired by the early days of MTV with fashions reminiscent of the last days of the twentieth century. Jodie Jay and her collaborators have converted a neighborhood bar into a dancehall, and while the feel is modern, there’s nothing in the clip that dates it. The star, for instance, sits on a pinball machine, and there are no personal electronic devices in sight. Disco roller-skaters hit the floor alongside breakdancers in Golden Age hip-hop gear. EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH NITRO R 

1. Where are you from? and introduce yourself.
I grew up in the Dominican Republic and the youngest of four siblings.  I come from a financially poor background where my mother worked as a cleaner and my father took on multiple different jobs such a chef, taxi driver etc to support the family. I spent most of my childhood in Cabarete.  

2. What made you think that you should pursue music as a career?
I became passionate about music and especially Reggaeton when I first heard it on the radio at 8 years old.  Since then, I knew I wanted to follow my passion and to pursue a career in music.

3. What’s the biggest obstacle you faced when you started making rap music?
Growing up poor, I worked multiple jobs to financially support myself and struggled to find and dedicate time to fully pursue rap music. It took me some time to be in a position where I am today.

4. What is your biggest accomplishment so far as an independent artist?
Joining the Dogface family and being a part of the Sony company. Prior to this, I represented Global Vodka and Liquid Nitro.

5. Who were some of your favorite artists growing up?
My favorite artists growing up were and still are Daddy Yankee, Don Omar and Wisin y Yandel.

6. What inspired you to write your lyrics?
My life experiences.

7. What about yourself do you think stands out the most compared to another similar artist?
I like to have a broader style of music with lyrics that appeal to a wider audience.

8. Tell us about your upcoming music projects.
I’m working hard on some Latin trap, dembow and reggaeton songs in my upcoming music.

9. If you could open up for any artist who would it be? and why?
I would be very honored to be able to open for any of my favorite artists mentioned earlier and/or Ozuna. They are all great performers and it would be a great opportunity to be able to see them perform and work with them.

10. Any last word or anything you would like to tell our supporters and fans before we end this interview?

1. Dominao V2

The intro airy bells amalgamated with the electro synth, let the audience in on the upcoming atmosphere: light, fun, with a dash of nitroglycerine. And yes, the name is based off the chemical compound but the record DOES feel like it once you hear Nitro R’s voice leading the composition: “Mami tú me tienes dominado/ Si esto fuera un juego tú me lo tienes ganado/ Te quiero ver right now/ Tú y yo nos vemos lindos combinados/ No quiero que te vayas de mi lado.” Nitro R’s voice is a firm baritone leaning into the bass register which adds weight to the narrative. It’s actually refreshing hearing a man saying “I don’t want you to leave my side” as the other end of the mainstream pop spectrum reeks with thotism. Yeah, we made up our own word

As Nitro R plunges into unapologetically professing his love for the mystery lady, the music locks the Reggaeton Romantico into the heart of the listener making it a record flexible enough to rock to when partying and equally for kicking it back while driving in your car. We gotta credit the smooth drums, the house synth granting Dominao V2 the IT factor, and the flawless mix and master. Notice how in the second verse Nitro R dabs in soft rap thus diversifying the pattern as to keep the audience engaged and entertained: “Mami tú eres lo que anhelo/ Tus lindos ojos me suben al cielo/ Tus labios son dos dulces caramelos/ Más tú eres mi modelo/ Contigo cuando sea me desvelo/ Y te hago el amor en el mismo suelo.”

This is good music. So good that you’ll warm to it even if Reggaeton is not your usual go-to genre.

2. Si Tú No Estás

We were able to pull the lyric video for Si Tú No Estás so one for Blue Rhymez Ent.! “La miré, me miró, sonreí, sonrió/ Ella y yo solos en mi habitación/ Desde que la toqué y su cuerpo besé/ Su aroma se fundió en mi piel” – sounds like a nice continuation to Despacito! Here’s the thing: flirtatious lyrics will always have a warm seat at the table for they’re hitting an insanely large audience of hopelessly romantic girls and women alike.

As you’ve noticed, Si Tú No Estás kicks off with a much more tranquil buildup than Dominao V2. An accurate representation for what’s about to happen later on. Lyrically that is. The musical lead belongs this time to a distant acoustic guitar, heavier drums, thicker synth, and overall a more sombre tonality of both voice and instruments. This ability to transpose words to feelings is one that will garner Nitro R plenty of admiration from his fans and respect from his peers.

The moment of plot unraveling comes right around here: “A un mundo lleno de placer/ A un mundo que sólo yo puedo entender/ Pero ya no eres mi mujer/ Dime que puedo hacer yo.” For those that don’t speak Spanish, Nitro R dropped a bomb on the audience revealing that his love interest is not his woman anymore. ¡Ay, caramba!

Despite the gravitas and sad plot twist, Si Tú No Estás is one strong earworm contender of the V2 EP.

3. He Buscado

Seems like the said relationship keeps taking nasty turns. In He Buscado, which translates as I’ve searched, Nitro R speaks about having searched for his woman in other beds, in other bodies, but to no avail. Realizing how the love of his life is irreplaceable. Safe to say, this record will ironically make a lot of ladies who’re secretely wishing for their exes to miss them – happy.

The chorus is one, long, sticky sequence that is beautiful and super replayable. For some reason, He Buscado feels like the most natural ambient for Nitro R. It’s faster paced than the first 2 records and we LOVE the rap parts. He should be applying more of this rap-on-the-verse-singing-on-the-chorus formula. This is officially Blue Rhymez Entertainment’s favorite song off V2. A commercial success waiting to happen.

4. Así Es Mi Vida

Think of I like it by Cardi B in lo-fi quality without the trumpets. That’s putting Así Es Mi Vida in simplistic terms. In more defined details, the clap pattern strongly reminds us of it. Plus the large room sounding vocals. The production styles are similar but Así Es Mi Vida is more stripped down.

Contextually wise, the record makes all the sense in the world as it reverts the attention of the audience from the love interest to the man of the hour: Nitro R. He sing-raps about his friends, his ideologies, his ways of partying, his passion for doing things. Definitely the calm life in effect.

V2 is an EP in accord with the global demand for Latin Trap and Nitro R is a heavyweight artist that can be deemed as a triple threat: he can rap, he can sing, and most of all, he can actually write good plots.

This one was a surprise to us as Sill is majorly a rap artist but the guy got voice control and pitch-perfect. Which honestly makes him much more qualified for the pop genre than many famous faces (hi Britney!). Mind you, he also made our Top 10 Rappers List. The only artist to have snatched spots in 2 different genres on our website.

9. The One You Need By Tayiha

My oh my that mezzo-soprano voice and the way it commands the instrumental! A perfect pop song for young adults, for those in tumultuous moments of a relationship, or equally for those who’ve had enough of their soon-to-be-ex. The One You Need is a gentle bop that is fit for a road trip, a limousine ride in the city, and girls’ night out!

8. Wake Up By Brandon Jones(B)

While it does carry a very serious message, Wake Up leans proudly towards radio sound, not being too dark or too slow. It’s actually quite damn perfect for a song to chill to on your way to work or… when you are angry at life. Suave vocals, perfect mix, powerful drums, and more meaning than a TedX talk, Wake Up will be your new favorite soul-pop song.

7. Favorite Friend By Hunter Root

Easily infectious and highly enjoyable, Favorite Friend is a stellar acoustic pop record that will have you going back to it every time you need to escape this weird reality. Cause let’s face it… The global lockdown made the real world harder to understand than your wildest dreams. So a pretty painted tree with a blue bird in it, and a golden-haired guy playing his guitar, feels like what normal is supposed to be. Enjoy!

6. Dancing With a Demon by Tom Gorsich ft. Jason Brownlow

For lovers of classic pop records, THIS is for you. Fast-paced and with lovely retro style production, highly engaging, and insanely catchy lyrics, Dancing With A Demon will become a staple pop song in your playlist. Guaranteed.

5. My Time By Luiza Nis

Dark pop at its best… No one does it better than the incredible Luiza Nis all the way from Brasil, but who’s rapidly gaining momentum and a loyal international fanbase. I mean… Lana Del Rey did her thing then went crazy on Twitter and disappointed everyone so there’s a huge gap left in the market. With airy but stable vocals, spotless arrangements, moods through and through, Luiza, please come and take your rightful place!

4. Same Old 2 Step By Gasner The Artist

We get it if Taylor Swift never made an impression on you. We do. Too much drama. But Gasner The Artist makes country-pop sound like it belongs right there in your phone since yesterday! Gorgeous vocals with a catchy hook, Same Old 2 Step is an outstanding melodic composition that will entertain you for weeks!

3. Chocolate Baby By Dockko

You ever heard of Jazz Pop? Probably the best thing we’ve heard musically since the strong ’80s comeback in 2020. Chocolate Baby got all the good stuff you could possibly dream of: high quality organic instrumental, soulful vocals, playful lyrics, and a charm that infiltrates your brain instantaneously. You are going to be hooked! Proceed with caution!

2. Let Go By Dan Millward x Real Hypha x Amindo

Some would call this a dance-EDM-ish track, but… compared to everything out there right now, this easily fits as modern pop. It’s a track that will have you feeling all kinds of ways, nostalgic if you just broke up, optimistic if you’re in the initial dating phase, grateful if you got a good one to hold on to. And those damn vocals!!! It should be illegal for a man to have such a charming voice. And don’t even get us started on the production. An undeniable topper.

1. Align By Shilpa Ananth

Avant-Pop like you’ve never heard it before. Floating through cosmos, ethereal vocals, alto at that, which we absolutely adore, and tinges of deep art with every verse, Shilpa Ananth is creating an entire lane of her own and being noticed by major publications while doing so. So flawless that we sincerely can not point out a single thing that could have been done better. Untouchable and undeniably deserving of the number one spot.

The song makes a very sophisticated introduction with the bass sounding aloof in the distance and swiftly shifting the attention on Dockko’s vocals hitting us with the hook: “Say I’m a chocolate baby it’s in my DNA/ Once you get this you’ll never gon’ walk the same/ Once you hit this you never gon’ think the same” hot daaamn! and this is not even the entire hook, only a part of it. We’re not going to break down the lyrics as they’re pretty… blunt However, we very much like how Dockko created such a sensual hook while focusing the main topic around being a chocolate baby, as most young black artists are not necessarily encouraged to be proud of who they are. Au contraire… a lot of the black celebrities, for one reason or another, sadly, end up bleaching their skin. And if you dig deeper, you can’t really blame them. Everyone wants to succeed, but when you’re shown clearly that your odds increase once you’re a lighter shade, it’s only logical to change what’s under your control: yourself. The only other mainstream encouragement as of recently is Beyonce’s Brown Skin Girl, and Kelly Rowland’s Coffeesingle. Songs like Chocolate Baby are of high importance to young black adults all over the world. At the end of the day, it’s the minds of the young ones music influences more than anything.

As we progress along, with a remarkable production and perfect voice mix, Dockko proceeds to lyrically showcase the spiritual, financial, and physical pride in who he is: “All my ni*** straight, yeah/ We came up from the bottom/ And they gon’ tell stories about us/ And you like keep going and you know it/ My brown skin Ima keep showing/ I spit them facts like a hood poet/ This melody got my skin glowing”. Generally, Dockko manifests an incredible power to fortify his beliefs to a very tremendous degree through his choice of words in Chocolate Baby: “Every time I look inside your eyes/ I can feel a pain/ It won’t go away/ Every time I look inside the sky/ I gotta pray al my ni*** find a way/ ‘Cause you can’t change/ The color of your skin/ It’s all in your DNA/ I’m a chocolate baby/ I’m a chocolate baby/ Need a taste/ I got the brown sugar in my veins”

In the 2nd verse is where Dockko takes it… there: “I found a chocolate baby and you know she sweet/ She all hot ‘n bothered and she drippin’ on my seats/ […] let me go and dip this strawberry/ All inside your chocolate” uhm… for all teenagers reading this right now, use protection On a serious note, it takes some serious talent to flow as effortlessly as Dockko does, switching from one topic to another while intercalating the two impeccably.

Chocolate Baby is a fun record that touches a matter very worth troubling about: the tough road to embracing and loving melanated skin. Tides are turning, times are changing, and Dockko is an artist of the present future. An artist that will be acknowledged as he properly deserves for the world is now ready to listen.
